Extraordinary Supplier : The Spotted Dog Flower Company

I first met Linda at our local Women in Rural Enterprise networking meeting, it would have been a few years ago now. I guess at the time I didn't have an understanding of just where all of our flowers come from, how far they travel in many cases and just what that means in terms of carbon footprint. Linda opened my eyes to what it means to use a local grower for your wedding flowers, what I especially loved her telling me about was that brides have been known to actually get down into the filed with Linda to make choices about their blooms!

When you meet Linda, there's no mistaking that this is a true labour of love, an absolute passion for her. ..... and a major career change from her previous life.

Linda tells me:

"During the last five years I have created a flower farm and floristry business specialising in British flowers, supported by husband Ted and daughter Louise. It’s difficult to believe I used to wear a suit and carry a laptop everywhere!

I was a stressed out IT Manager doing a role I no longer loved when an article in the Yorkshire Post newspaper about a lady who had formed an organisation called Flowers from the Farm, sparked my curiosity. She was sick of supermarket flowers, with little variety and no scent. She yearned for flowers remembered from childhood, cornflowers, daisies, sweet peas……the list is endless, and had resolved to do something about it. I went on a workshop and an idea was formed.

Five years later, now absolutely loving that I can get up in the morning, throw on jeans and a pair of wellies and be at work in the field in minutes, growing hundreds of varieties of scented and seasonal flowers for weddings and events. Growing, selling and creating designs with flowers and brings all of the challenges I need in my working life but seeing a bride’s face light up when I deliver the flowers, the thank you letters, the mention of how everyone remarked upon the scent of the flowers, makes my job hugely rewarding in many more ways. I love the interaction with people and working with them to create the wedding flowers they have always envisaged.

In 2018 my job has given me opportunities all over the country from supplying flowers to RHS Chelsea Flower Show, building stands at The Lincolnshire Show and Belvoir Castle Flower Festival to helping out with the Castle Howard Flower Festival managed by the hugely talented Fiona Pickles of Firenza Flowers".

I think you'll agree, there';s something quite special about what Linda's created. A couple can literally see their flowers from field to wedding if they so desire. Many trust Linda to make the most beautiful bouquets and garlands from whatever is seasonal and growing in the field, personally I find something very magical in what Linda and her family have created.
