Extraordinary Supplier: Helenae - Couture Millinery

I came across Helenae Couture Millinery through a Facebook networking community I'm a part of, Susan the creator of these fabulous pieces has re-launched her business this year and was delighted when I suggested that I feature her work on the blog. Based in Preston, Lancashire Susan has a passion for creating unique designs perfect for any mother of the bride, Mother of the groom or discerning wedding guest.

Susan shares with me:

"I’m probably best described as an eclectic creative!

I learned to sew from my grandmother as a child using her old treadle sewing machine, and have been experimenting with fabrics and trimmings ever since. I started making bridal tiaras and fascinators in 2001 after a chance visit to a wedding fayre with a cake decorator friend, which ultimately led me to doing some work for a local hat shop.

I took a break from making occasions headdresses when they became more widely available in shops, as I found the market for individually designed pieces dropped off. It was heart-breaking, but the trend for fascinators changed back then. Thankfully they’re back in fashion!

I went to a family wedding last summer and really wanted to wear a fascinator. Unfortunately I couldn’t find anything I really loved and ended up going without. With the announcement of the forthcoming Royal Weddings, and fascinator hats becoming popular again, I decided to re-launch my business this year.

I’ve always been fascinated by hats, especially the glamour of the 1950s, so making them is something I take a great deal of enjoyment from. I love making my ready to wear collections as it allows me to explore my creativity fully, but I most enjoy creating something especially for ladies who are looking for occasions head wear designed for them.

It’s a personal process involving getting to know the lady, her personality and style, and designing something that suits her outfit, face shape and hairstyle. The most rewarding part for me is seeing photographs of the ladies wearing their head wear at their special events, it makes me really proud to have been involved in a small  way in making them feel fabulous".

I don't know about you, but I love the idea that you can have something unique made to match your outfit and that you won't turn up to find someone else wearing the same! All joking aside, how wonderful that you can have something so beautiful that is bespoke, for me that adds that little something special.
