Extraordinary Real Wedding: Phoebe & Steven's Rustic Barn Themed Day.


If there's one part of the country that holds beautiful rustic charm, it's the Cotswolds. In fact I'm going to let you into a little secret, my daughter and fellow blogger Sarah was conceived there, so for me it's a very special place, I often joke she has made in the Cotswolds stamped on her bottom !

So what better than to find the gorgeous rustic barn wedding of Phoebe and Steve, in this idyllic part of the country . I love the countryside feel to this wedding. The richness of the colours and the feeling of somehow being transported back in time ( with the odd modern touch).

Phoebe tells me:

My partner Steve is a Chef and has worked in some brilliant pubs and restaurants around the Cotswolds for the past ten years; I myself work at a Sign Company in Shipston on Stour and dabble in graphic design within the company. Were both quite creative Steve more so with food, tastes, ideas and presentation and I’m more into my art and crafts.

We live in a beautiful little village called Bourton-on-the-hill, Near Moreton in Marsh. Fields surround the village and farmland so pretty lovely walks all round. We have a little cottage in the village which is very much in keeping with the theme of the wedding /or the wedding was very much in keeping with the house.

Steve and I have been together nearly ten years, we met at school and have been inseparable ever since, were still both a pair of weirdo’s. We got engaged on the 25.09.15 in Jamaica, Steve got down on one knee on my birthday after visiting Croydon in the mountains in Jamaica and it was perfect. I just remember him giving me this little box wrapped in Christmas paper (his mum had wrapped it and being resourceful had up cycled some Christmas paper) that’s now a little joke between us, I opened the little box expecting earrings or a necklace and look up to see Steve down on one knee on the balcony with a bottle of bubbly, of course then the tears came, it was the most amazing day I could ask for and a complete surprise. 2 years on and now were married and enjoying life together as Husband and Wife ☺

What made you choose the specifics of your wedding , the venue, colours and theme?

Venue:

I spent hours and hours searching the Internet for the perfect venue, Steve and I are pretty laid back but when it came to the venue Steve wanted somewhere he could choose the caterer and bar, being a chef he is really passionate about the food being spot on, and having the flexibility to have whatever wines, beers and spirits of our choosing.

Well I came across Oxleaze barn, not to far from us either between Burford and Lechalade in a lovely area called Filkins, it had recently opened but it was a stunner! We booked in to view the venue and well we decided it was for us when we got there, that evening we booked it without seeing anywhere else. It was dry hire so we were able to provide our own bar and find our own caterer, Perfect! Big thumbs up for Steve, and you could also hire out the barn behind to use for storage or getting ready, kids etc. & another added extra was we could use the garden of the house for the photos, the garden attached was beautiful and so well looked after it was fantastic.

Colours:

We love rich colours and because it was October we thought it would be fitting to have a deep red wine colour with warm browns and rich greens, very autumnal, and with that you kind of already know the colours go together as you can look outside the window and see them all around in the tree, hedgerows and landscape.

We managed to find 3 beautiful dresses while doing a bit of Christmas shopping from Ted Baker, success! We had found the bridesmaid dresses. They we a rich wine colour in a beautiful satin material with cut outs to the side just giving it a slightly modern look to it, less of the formal bridesmaid look, I thought the girls looked stunning!

The suits were from a fantastic place in Bedford called Vintage Suit Hire we went for the Burford range, the suits were 3 piece in a lovely tweed brown, with burnt orange buttons, this went with a very pale blue shirt to break it up a little and wine red bow tie and pocket square. My dress was a Maggie Sottero and as soon as I put it on it was a winner!

Flowers:

We all had beautiful autumn themed flowers, my bouquet looked like it had just been scooped up from a woodland floor, it was incredible the colours were fantastic, pale pinks, dusky purple, deep reds and beautiful greens, I also had a fantastic flower crown using the same theme as the bouquet.

The boys each had a flower used in the bouquet to make their button holes so all different but with a common theme, the bridesmaids had beautiful feathery pink bouquets and it complemented their dresses perfectly, Our flower girl had a little flower crown and a corsage for her wrist and she looked super sweet.

Theme:

We were getting married in a converted grain store on a working farm so we thought keep it rustic, wild and countrified. We made all the table decorations, the candle sticks we made were from a chopped up tree from our neighbours garden, the cake stand was a tree stump we round while walking in the woods, which we spent many hours sanding, waxing and oiling, we made everyone and individual name place from round of wood we cut from a half moon, each person had a homemade elderflower cordial and a batch of homemade fudge, we were trying to do most of it ourselves to help with cost and to be involved with the process, so I made all the little bags for the favours and spent many hours taking the labels off jars for the flowers and the elderflower bottles.

I spent quite a bit of time designing and making the invites, order of service, menus, games for the guests to make it personal to everyone we had invited. It really was a labour of love but so worth it, we had the best day of our lives!!

Food:

We kept this simple and generally to what everyone would eat, the started was a platter of Pate, meats, cheeses, bread, pickles etc everyone loved it, main was braised beef cheeks with a rich jus, mushrooms, and creamy mash & last but not least pudding was a fresh lemon posset.

Our caterer was fantastic – Need to look these guys up (Jacks Kitchen), made everything so personal, everyone loved the food! It was filling and warming! In the evening we had a beautiful hog roast from a friend and a local supplier to us under the name of Paddock Farm, definitely the best butchers round!!

Hair and Makeup:

My self and my bridesmaid all had their hair and make up done by two gorgeous ladies, Alice Trout for hair and Lucy cook for Makeup, they were amazing to work with and both girls were absolutely lovely, they worked around us and made us feel at ease. All the girls looked beautiful and I couldn’t have been happier with the way my hair and makeup looked on the day, I felt like a princess ☺

Photographer:

We chose the best photographer ever! We booked Sam only a couple of months after we got engaged and it was the best decision, he was the first photographer we had seen but we just got this vibe from him, he was genuine, funny and really easy to talk to. His photos were amazing, so natural and nobody looked staged, we received a snippet of our photos a week after the wedding and they are fantastic, all our family and friends have agreed. Sam was a fantastic price, he kept in contact the two year prior to the wedding, and he offered a fab price and was there for at least 12 hours capturing the whole time!
