Extraordinary Real Wedding: Watch out for the Daleks!

August 18, 2017

What do you get when you have a nerdy Marvel fan and a Whovian ? ( for those who aren't au fait with the term, it's what Dr.Who fans are known as) A unique and quirky wedding , that's what!

There is an ongoing joke in our family that should my daughter Sarah and her partner Gareth ever tie the knot, Dr Who would have to feature. (Gareth formerly presented the Dr Who podcast no less, so I guess you could say he's a bit of an aficionado on the subject! ) Dr Who even had a small part to play in our own wedding, for those who've seen our highlights video will know, our page boy Jack ( Gareth's 5 year old) had a sonic screwdriver inside his tuxedo jacket pocket throughout the whole thing.

So when I came across a Dr Who versus Marvel wedding, it simply had to be included as one of the real weddings blogs.

Ruth & Chris Nicholaidis got hitched on 11th December 2016.

Ruth tells me:

"We got married in St Ebba's Church in Ebchester County Durham - this is the church in the village where I grew up & I've always wanted to get married there - Luckily Chris agreed it was a stunning setting for our wedding day too.

We quickly agreed on our wedding colours as I wanted Silvery/grey & a shade of purple (my maid of honour) suggested Heather/Mauve & Chris said he wanted Tardis Blue so that was easily decided.

I knew before I met Chris who I wanted to make my wedding cake (if I ever got married) & this was Sandra Clennell from Sugarfun Cake Artistry. At the time Sandra was running her cafe so I spent about a month convincing her to make our wedding cake...Something along the lines of but no one else can make our cake Sandra...only you can make our cake.  Eventually Sandra agreed to take up the challenge of our wedding cake  (after explaining  the first dates she had was September or December 2016 so we said we'd get married in December lol!)

The cake was a feat of engineering as well as a master class in design - The Marvel side of the cake is now displayed in Sandra's shop for us.  There was several hand made figures & flowers which must have taken Sandra several days to make as she does everything by hand & then the stand it was housed on took 2 weeks to design & build.  She must love her job & a challenge.   We even had random people popping into our wedding reception room to see the cake as everyone was talking about it including the staff. The next day Chris & I went into the room to get our items & there was a bloke in taking photo’s of the cake - he turned to us & said have you seen this wedding cake to which we could reply yes we’re the couple - the guy stood & had a chat with us for ages about our wedding as he was in such awe of the cake.

So we had the cake sorted & the dress was bought off the peg before we set the date & we knew the church & venue.  I purchased my Maid of Honour’s dress from BHS & her daughter who was my bridesmaid from ebay.  I also bought us winter wedding capes - my 2 maids had floor length in a pale silver/grey colour & I had a blue cape with a train. The 2 younger members of our bridal party had Marvel & Dr Who theme trainers purchased for them & we also purchased my nephew a Marvel tie & pocket square.

We also purchased a custom designed double ring box with the Dr Who gallifreyan on that says “I will love you through all of space and time” as this was in our invites (day & evening) as well as on the cake.

Next came the florist - my Auntie had suggested I met this lady so went to a wedding fair & made an appointment to meet at my Aunties for a cuppa (my Auntie used to work in the wedding industry) & within 5 minutes of meeting her she described my bouquet to me & although I got quotes from elsewhere for what I wanted I knew in my heart of hearts I had to book Julie Reid from the Enchanted Florist.  I knew from the start I didn't want any ivory in my flowers & I wanted our wedding colours throughout my flowers which I knew Julie could do & I was right my flowers were amazing - I cried happy tears when she came the morning of the wedding - they were so perfect & I still love looking at photo’s of them now…The colours stood out but complimented each other perfectly. They were totally amazing & I still get guests asking about them now.  We also went for pretty centre pieces from Julie which worked perfectly with the table talkers we did which had the table names on, the menu choices & some random but fun facts.

For our photographer - we looked some up, got prices & then decided which ones we wanted to meet - we met David Webb first who popped over for a cuppa & a chin wag.  He was personal, professional & friendly & then there was the others - they were rude arrogant, didn't want to provide us with what we wanted - one even rolled his eyes & tutted at me when I asked about them covering the first dance & I knew I didn't want to ever see him again for sure, so we booked David the very next day.  David was perfect for our big day, he was warm, friendly & it was like he was part of the family from day one.  We had a pre-wedding photo shoot with him which was brilliant fun & he made us both feel totally relaxed which is what you need on your wedding day. (All photo’s in this blog are provided by David Webb).

I knew I wanted a Magician at the wedding & found one who came highly recommended called James Hudson who also did balloon modelling so I booked him for 5 hours for a mix of magic & balloons - he had the genius idea of entertaining the kids in a different room when the speeches were going on which worked a treat (there was adult supervision from parents too lol)

We also booked a local DJ Glen Hunter for the evening do - we gave him a short list of wants & a shorter lists of don’t wants & gave him the heads up for the first dance which is detailed below.

This was the major stuff sorted except for the rings & we couldn't find anything we liked in the shops but we found a local company that make custom designed rings so we made an appointment for one of them to come out for a chat, explained what we wanted & showed pics...got a very reasonable price & booked them in there & then with Rings by design.

The only thing left to sort was the men's suits so with 6 weeks to go Chris finally ordered his from Master Debonair - we thought they were London based but turned out they were local to us & the suits were perfect from these guys...The service we received from them was second to none too.

As well as these awesome suppliers of which Julie, David & Rings by Design are all up for North East Wedding Award 2017 shows our taste must be pretty good!

I booked a local lady called Mandy from Scissorhands to do our hair & I booked a range of beauty treatments for me & my maids (plus my mum) at their salon & the owner kindly agreed to come out to my parents house on the morning of the wedding to do our make up - it was perfect knowing these would not only do an amazing job but I knew that regardless of the weather they would be there.

As well as printed stationery & finishing touches we decided to take a break from the norm & have a 10 minute presentation video as part of our first dance - this had photo’s of us, thanks to guests & then a little teaser so they wondered what our first dance was before we danced together as husband & wife.

Everyone was then invited to join us for the second & third song. It was such fun & the photo’s of guests faces watching us will never be forgotten - or was it the video that captured their attention more (trust me it was the latter lol) all of which are available for Mrs Nerd’s.

It was great fun, no one expected it although after the cake was revealed on a motorised cake stand via bluetooth I think they realised anything was possible.

As soon as we got engaged we started looking for our perfect invites but nothing stood out whilst still being affordable so we designed our own stationery.

Our day time invites were designed to look like Tardis & the evening invites were an 8 page comic book.  We also designed our Orders of Service, sweetie bags, table talkers which also served as table names & menu options plus they had some funny random facts on to get our guests chatting & giggling & table name cards.

Instead of the usual printed sign we designed our own laser etched sign for the cake table to say no peeking although this didn’t have the desired effect & instead was like moth to a flame , we also designed our own lapel pins & tie pins for the men.

About Mrs Nerd’s Wonder Emporium

We had such a fantastic reaction to our wedding stationery with random strangers suggesting we could make a business out of it & so Mrs Nerd’s Wonder Emporium was born.

The name needed to reflect what we are trying to do & I am married to a Nerd so Mrs Nerd seemed appropriate & because we’re not only a wedding stationer the Wonder Emporium seemed to fit the bill perfectly. We have so much we can offer our customers & in a wide range of affordable but cool one off items that they’ll want to keep.

We want our customer's guests to want to keep their invites & to be as excited as they are about their wedding.

Not only can we offer printed & laser etched items but also handmade scarves, paper bouquets, personalised poems, speeches or readings - it really is a Wonder Emporium for couples getting married or guests heading to an event.

As well as all the printed stationery we’re in the unique position to be able to offer couples a short animated video which is designed to show get guests as excited as their wedding as they are…This video can comprise of photo’s, little animations or information about their big day which can be shared over social media & via email.  These need to be seen to be believed".
